Stop Craving for Safety

We love safety to the point we are afraid of doing new things

Or we tend to do new things in too safe of a way. When I first began drawing, I was so afraid of making bad drawings. So instead of trying to apply newly learned knowledge to complete a drawing, I kept focusing on the practice, exercises and never finished a whole piece.

I once helped my girlfriend’s father installing and purchasing an anti-virus software license. Before I did that, I told him that upgrading to Windows 10 would be more beneficial because Windows Defender is pretty decent as an AV. He ended up telling me that he would rather pay to get Kaspersky running on the old system, just because he was afraid of losing personal files on the hard-drive, despite my assurance that everything had been backed up and all files could be kept after the upgrade. We pay for our crazy crave.

We do useless things unconsciously

On one occasion, I saw a woman continuously pressing the blinker switch on her bike(most people ride bikes in Vietnam) even though she was going straight. My girlfriend also confessed being guilty of that, just because she was afraid of leaving the blinker on. I realized how much a person can crave for safety, so much we do useless things without acknowledging it as useless.

The same thing applies almost everywhere. When we feel nervous or shy or anxious, we unconsciously making useless gestures like scratching, touching, leaning, closing our body, just so we feel safe. I have learned about that during my 1-month training program for my new job. Teaching is a kind of public speaking, and those who do not eliminate untrustworthy gestures will get eliminated.

Start small, take the risks

Though always taking risks is not a wise plan, I would say that getting used to taking risks and failing when you do new things is beneficial, just like what I am doing now, I draw, I blog, I am looking for a place to put my faith in… I really have nothing to lose, and when I start my own business, I wouldn’t be afraid no more.
