Lingering Love

She retraces her steps
Following tears
On a broken path
Dating back twenty years

Clutching her bosom
A portrait held tight
His words only whisper
Hauntings at night

A love not forgotten
Lingers on her lips
Kisses from yesterday
Spine-chilling; heart-skips

Cruel constant reminders
Drowning in dreams
Gasping for air
Awakening screams

Shivering night sweats
A cycle complete
She turns to her left-side
greeting an empty bedsheet

Outstretching her arm
meets his retired hand
Comforted by spirit
Only ghosts understand

Waking-hours occupy her
Time spent in work-talk
Alas, evening rekindles
One lone widow’s walk

Death defies boundaries
Sacred heart groves
Love senses motion
In its farthest alcoves
