What a Year of Pandemic has Done to Us

Do not lose sight of the big picture.

Yesterday, March 15th my father went into surgery. Only one family member (me) could remain inside the hospital for the duration of the surgery, but that was it. As soon as he was out, so was I.
Because I knew they will send me home after my father's surgery, and while waiting in the waiting room, I started thinking about how the world has changed in just one year.

One year ago, my father would not have been alone for one second, from the moment he entered the hospital till the moment he got out of it, and now is so different. The hospital felt deserted, I just saw security staff, doctors, and nurses but that was it. As I was leaving walking through the corridor, I went by a few opened doors and saw all the patients alone; I got so sad, and it made me want to cry.

I consider myself lucky, so far everyone around me remains covid-free, but suddenly all the tv news from the firsts weeks of lockdown came to my mind, I remembered the interviews with family members crying because they couldn't say their goodbyes, the nurses and doctors tears because they felt powerless for their patients, exhausted for the long shifts, complaining about the insufficient resources. It wasn´t enough, still is not enough.

When I got home last night, one fear came to mind; after just one year we are used to this normality, we are used to wearing face masks, to keep a social distance from our friends, colleagues, etcetera. But I also notice that many people are forgetting to take these actions anymore and are being irresponsible with their own lives and everybody else's. I understand that life goes on and we have to go on with it as well, but let's not lose sight of the big picture here, this way of life is not normal but if we want to get back to what we consider normal a year ago, if we want to be around of our love's ones, to hug them, kiss them, to be with them at the hospital, then please, wear your face masks, keep the distance, respect everyone around you.

If everyone does their part, I am sure we will win this battle against COVID sooner than we thought.

When I woke up today and saw an email with a link to the post below, I instantly knew what story I wanted to write today.
