Wrinkle in Time

Prompted by the trailers for the upcoming movie, I picked up the 50+ year old classic and read it along with its four counter parts in the Qunitet (link): They are solidly “young adult” fiction and…

The Reason for This Blog

I think any reasonable person would agree that, in general, news media in the United States is hugely imperfect. Where this agreement ends, for most people, is why exactly news media is so imperfect. I believe that one reason is that it is far too reliant on the opinions of political pundits, opinions that, to varying degrees, are largely based on speculation and emotion rather than hard science. This is not a new problem for the media in this country: as any political scientist will tell you, there has long been a divide between those in academia and those in the media. I have always found this divide to be somewhat bizarre given that, ostensibly, both are in the business of uncovering the truth.

I have personally made it my mission in life to help bridge the divide between the news media and the world of academia. Currently, I am studying political science at the undergraduate level, after which I plan on pursuing a graduate degree in journalism and communications. I think our country could benefit significantly from political discourse that is based on facts and reasoning rather than emotion and tribalism. My hope is that these areas of study will prepare me to contribute meaningfully to the national discussion and hopefully, in the process, help change the state of political discourse.

Of course, I am still many years off from reaching my academic goals and, in the meantime, I have a lot to say. This blog is meant to be a forum for fact-based discussions about the current state of affairs in our country. This is not a blog that is meant to be neutral: I have many strong opinions, and I intend on expressing them fervently. The difference between this and some other political blogs is that this will not be a place for hot takes or quick reactions to political happenings: any opinions I express will be followed by a detailed explanation of the facts and reasoning behind them (or I will point you in the direction of an existing explanation if it is a relatively common opinion). I will also, on occasion, speculate about the future. It is nearly impossible to have a meaningful discussion about politics without doing so. However, as with my opinions, any speculation will be based on facts, facts that I will lay out in detail.

My hope in making this blog is to heighten the discussion of politics in this country, and that goal can only be accomplished if you, the reader, engage in this discussion as well. On that note, I strongly encourage you to comment whenever possible. If there is something you feel needs to be elaborated, by all means elaborate. If there is any part in a piece that you feel is incorrect, feel free to debunk it. If there is something you believe I have not adequately explained, demand clarification. I will read and respond to any comments that are meaningful and respectful, including and especially if you disagree with me.

I am not under the illusion that this blog will have any measurable impact on state of political discourse in this country. However, there remains few places to have meaningful political discussions and my only hope is to provide one, however small.
