Bans Only Work on Books and Drag Shows

I can’t stop thinking about my beautiful, loud, funny 18-month-old sitting in her school.

How she looks up from her toys when I walk in, comes over to me, and hugs me for a full minute at pick up.

How she hugs her teachers when she first gets there for comfort.

How she waves bye to her little friends when we’re walking out the door.

Then I think about how she knows her dad and I give her food, water, and all the love she could ever want.

When she gets hurt, she knows we will hug her until she stops crying.

She knows we will hold her hand for balance as she walks.

She trusts us to nibble on her little toes but not actually bite them.

She knows that she’s safe when we are there because it is our job to protect her and we spend the minutes, hours, days, months proving that to her.

I think about how she tears up when there’s an unexpected loud noise. Her little face just…crumbles.

I think about that little face if she heard gunshots, and how terrified she would be. And how she wouldn’t understand what is happening, or why her dad and I aren’t there.

I think about pulling into that parking lot and being told my beautiful, loud, funny 18-month-old won’t be hugging me that day or ever again.

We watch kids die, we offer prayers.

We watch kids die, we offer thoughts.

We watch kids die, we have a moment of silence.

We watch kids die, we pass permitless carry.

We watch kids die, we push to get rid of background screenings.

We watch kids die, we ask how can this be happening again and again and again and again.

We know how it is happening. But you tell us bans only work on books and drag shows.
