My Miseducation of Porridge

Porridge. Until the last few years, I had largely ignored the sloppy beast. I even associated eating porridge with old people with visions of grandparents chowing down on the stuff in nursing homes because they didn’t have enough teeth. Or any teeth. I avoided it. It looked funny. It had a weird texture. It wasn’t Coco Pops.

Well, I’ve changed.

Ever since that first bowl back in May 2013 (day unknown… what a disappointment that life-changing event wasn’t recorded), I have fallen under the spell of the gloop that I only ever associated with Scottish people, cold weather and of course, the elderly. I have discovered an alternate reality. And I like it. A lot. Why did I decide to finally try it? Well, I’ve been on a ‘health’ kick the last few years and I read that oats were really good for health and maintaining a healthy weight. So with all the other hippie products I purchase now, I decided it was time to branch out further.

Porridge is THE meal I most look forward to. It’s a meal I like to be most creative with each day. So I see a question ballooning around your head: How do I cook THE best porridge? Sensei answers: But what is the best porridge?

Porridge, like other art forms, is a highly subjective matter. It can be a sensitive topic. Although I’m pretty sure there haven’t been porridge wars, how to cook porridge is just as controversial as… I mean, like some people prefer it really, really gooey. I kinda don’t mind the occasional firmer consistency. Just give it a try and you’ll know what your taste buds prefer. Just make sure you don’t burn the crap out of the bottom of the saucepan.
Somewhat of a DISCLAIMER: I guess I also need to point out that I’m only dealing with sweet varieties of porridge. I don’t dig savoury yet. I’m slowly building a relationship with it. Truthfully though, I’m not at all.

So every week, for one year, I will publish a porridge recipe. A journey through the land of oats and plant milk (that’s right, folks, this is vegan). I look forward to meeting you along the way!
