How To Conquer A Networking Event With Any Mindset

Last night I attended my first networking event in over a month. I was once told by a Philly founder who raised over $2 million, “no matter what, just keep showing up.” However, this can be difficult.

Attending networking events is like the gym. If you go off routine, it’s 10x harder to jump back in. Without preparation, that first time back in the gym can lead to soreness which will deter you even further.

I did not want to stretch my networking muscles and attend the event for 2 hours. However, while amping myself up to attend the event I had an epiphany regarding some advice from Derek Sivers.

I decided to give this a try. No matter someone’s title or industry, I would think of them as interesting and I would never allow myself to become bored.

By doing this I quickly became more open to introducing myself to strangers. Without knowing it, the first stranger introduced me to a second. From the second, I met a woman running a radio show with 2million views a week. It snowballed from there.

Showing interest led to fantastic results and I will continue to remain interested in everyone’s personal story.

Response from the man himself regarding the quote above.
